The community of St. Mary’s Nursing Home, of St. Mary’s Province, India, informs us about the sad demise of SR. PEREIRA DIOS ANGELINA MARIQUI
( Rosario)
, on 29th March 2008.

Sr. Rosario was born on 5th May 1924 in Goa. Responding to the Call of God, she joined the Congregation of Dominican Missionary Sisters of Rosary on the 4th of June, in the year 1963. She had her initial formation in Spain and made her First Profession on 22nd January 1967. It was in Goa (India) on the 20th of January 1973, she made her Final Profession.

In Goa she contributed in the formation, by being an active member in the formation team. The Novitiate house in Vadodara started in 1980 and Sr. Rosario was transferred to Mumbai. Sr. Rosario was an excellent teacher. After her Profession, she was teaching in a school at Mumbai. She worked as a teacher for quite a long time. For 23 years she gave her best to Mumbai. She was involved in the parish activities like giving catechism, visiting people - the sick and the elderly and praying for them. She was instrumental in the initial formation of candidates teaching them English and basic Catechism.

In the year 2004, she suddenly got sick and was brought to St. Mary’s Nursing Home for better care and medication and slowly she improved in her health. Even though, she was elderly and ailing with Diabetes and other ailments, she continued to contribute to the community in whatever way possible, for e.g. Card making, Rosary, embroidery…etc. She never wasted her time till the end.

She was a person for whom, as true Dominicans, Obedience to the authority mattered a lot. She was a person very punctual and followed the timetable sincerely. Her life was an inspiration to the young ones to whom she would constantly urge to love Jesus and Mary. Prayer was for her, her spiritual food without which she could not be. Bible was her constant companion. Her child like faith and simplicity won everybody’s heart. She would express her gratitude to God and people for each and everything with a heartfelt “thank you”. She was a person who was neat and tidy and well disciplined. All of us in the province hold fond memories of her in our hearts. She had been a source of inspiration as a committed Dominican Missionary to both the young and the old.

During the Holy week her condition became serious, and it was found that she had stones in the gall bladder. Later during Easter Week, on the 27th of March, her gall bladder ruptured, she was taken into emergency and was suggested to undergo a minor surgery, to remove the stones from the Gall Bladder. The doctors said that her condition was critical and was kept under observation for 40 hours. For the first day of the operation she was ok. On the second day, her condition started deteriorating, and on 29th of March, at 5.45 a.m. she passed away peacefully.

Her Funeral took place on Sunday, the 30th of March 2008 at Holy Family Church, Gomtipur, Ahmedabad. There were around 45 sisters from different communities who attended the funeral. The Local youth and people were very collaborative and helped us in all the possible ways for the mass and the funeral. The Vicar General of the Diocese Fr. Rocky Pinto was the main celebrant, and four other priests con-celebrated the mass with him.

It was a privilege to have Our General - Sr. Dominga Garro OP and Vice - General Sr. Conchita Goicoechea OP with us for the funeral. Sr. O’ Enone Pinto OP, our Provincial bid her farewell on behalf of the province and the congregation.

May her soul rest in peace and may she continue to intercede for us from her heavenly abode.
