2nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT

fr. Shailendra, IMS

I Reading: Bar 5:1-9                         II Reading: Phil 1:4-6, 8-11                         Gospel: Lk.: 3:1-6

You have heard of Darwin’s theory of evolution. Besides Darwin’s theory of evolution there is a theory of evolution by Jesuit priest and scientist philosopher Thelhard de Chardin. According to him there are four stages of evolution-first one is lithosphere–that is the stage of inanimate objects like stone etc.  Then second sphere is biosphere – a sphere where life appears. The third one is the noose sphere- the sphere of mind, where consciousness appears. And the final stage is the goal of evolution-which is Christosphere- where everything will be like Christ, everything will be filled with the presence of Christ. Where one will be enveloped by the divine milieu.

In my opinion this Christosphere is the Christmas season- a season in which Christ is present among us. This is what the name Emanuel means.   It is season of heavenly joy and peace, a season of celebration. This is the season we all are waiting for.

Advent is a sphere between noose sphere and Christo sphere. In this period we do not wait passively but actively. We prepare ourselves and make fit for Christo sphere. Here I would apply the Darwin’s principle of survival of the fittest. Only those who have well prepared and made themselves fit will enter the Christo sphere. How do you make yourself fit to enter the Christo-sphere. For Darwin it is a fight between different species and different creatures. It is a constant struggle with the environment and other hostile forces in the nature. Well, to make ourselves fit we need to struggle with the forces within us and forces around us. The things of the world, the attractions of the world keep on pulling us away from the Lord and our desires and wishes will forces us to go out to this things of the world. We need to develop an attitude of detachment to the things of the world. There is a story about Socrates. One day he was standing at a stall, which sold all kinds of wares. Socrates stood gazing at the stall and finally said, “What a lot of things I don’t need.”

Darwin’s evolution progressed from without-outside. Darwin’s stress was on the physical evolution. And that type of evolution is no more on except in the beauty parlors. Some of us need more time to make up our faces than to make up our minds. For Thelhard the evolution progressed from within. It is the development of the within that will lead to Christo sphere. And within man there is a universe. There are three planets, which govern our life, these are planets heart, brain and the mind and they control us. We should know what is happening on the inner planets. We have to explore our mind, heart, and brain and find out exactly what is happening there. What sort of weather rules on these planets. We have to dig and find what sort minerals, the feelings, thoughts, ideas are hidden. There can be an eclipse of one planet by the other. We have to control the planet, which runs around the universe faster than any other planet-that is our mind. Then the brain which is like a gold mine and yet the same time a nuclear bomb. You can take out of it precious, thoughts and change the face of the world or you can drop it like a bomb on the earth and destroy the world. After all an evil thought of war can destroy the world. Then, the heart, seat of all emotions and feelings. We need to see what kinds of feelings rule this planet. We need to find out in which stage of evolution we are in? Are we still in the sphere of stone-hard, opaque, insensitive to the needs and feelings of others? Or we are in the bio-sphere of vegetative life just depending on others to survive or still in noose sphere where we have restless mind like butterfly?  What we need this day is the evolution of ourselves from within to receive Jesus.
